The key thing is that, in movies, dialogue is TELLING not SHOWING. Sure, if you're good enough "telling" is fine and entertaining, but showing is intrinsically more interesting. I don't think I've seen On Golden Pond and I think you might have nailed the reason, but some of my favorite movies are mostly dialogue. Clerks, for instance.
