This is almost certainly one of the worst movies ever. The cinematography is terrible, the writing is hackneyed and cliched, and the actors are chewing the scenery.

Worse, the concept is awesome, which means they’ve ruined it for everyone else, too.

1. I don’t know that “Werewolves: The Origin of Species plus Vampires in Medieval Times” qualifies as an awesome concept. In fact, I’d say that the premise, and their execution thereof was so hollow that you could produce a film with the same basics, and if you managed to make it good, no one would remember this piece of crap. They barely remember it now, a year after its release.

2. It should also be mentioned that the film has a pretty good cast. Not that they help.

3. The director of photography, Ross Emery, has been the Second Unit Director of Photography on a number of good looking films, and I never noticed any shots in those films that looked uncharacteristic or out of place in their badness. My assumption is that the man is probably good at following the established look.

The established look for the Underworld films is hideous, liberally applied blue filter. For no good reason. The first two Underworld films suffered from this, although this time the black and blue colour palette has become more strict. The film also had a budget similar to the original film, but with epic medieval battles and other pointless bullshit. The result of this a combination of excessive greenscreening and cheap special effects, a general visual muddiness that is difficult to penetrate.

4. I wrote this ridiculous rant instead of that red pen that I owe you. I know. I’m heading out to get coffee now, and then its red pen time. I promise.

5. Also. god. What a terrible movie.

1) Dude, when the first movie came it, it was like “Werewolves fighting vampires like the Matrix”. They could have done that here. Given each awesome and unique powers and used them in cool ways. The only thing unique was the flying discs coming out of the sword.

2) The writing is so bad, a good cast would probably have chosen a different movie. Like the chick from the first two movies did.

3) There were absolutely no shots that stood out in any way, and seriously, did it HAVE to be that dark?

4) looking forward to the red pen.

5) I suppose I should have expected its badness. In fact, in my heart of hearts, I did and rented it anyways.
